Why The MG Windsor EV is India’s Hottest-Selling Electric Car Right

The Indian electric vehicle market is witnessing rapid growth, and at the forefront of this transition in the passenger vehicle segment is JSW MG Motor India’s Windsor EV. Launched as the brand’s third all-electric model, after the Comet and the ZS EV, the Windsor has quickly become the best-selling EV in the country. With over 15,000 units sold and consistent monthly sales of around 3,000 units, this crossover-styled electric hatchback has not only solidified MG’s position in the EV segment but also played a crucial role in the brand’s overall growth. But what makes this car a massively sought-after offering? Let’s take a look.

The MG Windsor’s success comes from a mix of factors. It offers great value for money with its competitive pricing. Plus, it comes packed with smart features designed for comfort, convenience, and practicality – many of which are not available in other cars at this price. And most importantly, the innovative BaaS model has changed the game entirely, making EVs more affordable than ever.

The MG Windsor comes in three variants: Excite, Exclusive, and Essence. All are powered by a front- mounted electric motor producing 136 hp and 200 Nm of torque. This setup makes city driving enjoyable, with the instant torque of an EV adding a touch of excitement while overtaking or cruising. Besides that, it offers smooth, effortless acceleration that enhances everyday commutes.

It comes with a 38 kWh battery pack, offering a claimed range of 332 km per charge. With a fully- juiced battery pack, the MG Windsor offers enough battery life for a hassle-free trip from Delhi to Jaipur, which is around 270 km. This means you can complete the journey with some range to spare, without worrying about frequent charging stops. That said, the Windsor ensures a smooth and stress- free drive between cities while also being efficient for daily commutes.

One of the key reasons behind the Windsor’s popularity is MG’s Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model. This flexible ownership plan allows buyers to purchase the car without the battery at a significantly lower cost and pay for battery usage separately at Rs 3.5 per km. This model lowers the initial cost of acquisition and makes EV ownership more accessible, addressing one of the biggest hurdles for potential EV buyers in India.

Adding to this, the quilted leatherette upholstery elevates comfort levels, while features like rear AC vents and LED reading lights make the cabin more passenger-friendly. This attention to detail in rear- seat comfort makes the Windsor a perfect family EV, ensuring that both the driver and passengers enjoy a relaxed journey. Besides that, it also offers other features such as a central armrest with cup holders, adjustable headrest, 6-way power adjustable front seats with ventilation and more.
MG Windsor EV: Tech-loaded cabin

MG has packed the Windsor EV with technology that enhances convenience and driving experience. The model boasts a massive 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system – the largest in its class. To the eyes, it feels like a television in the car and offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 9- speaker Infinity sound system, and an MG App Store for impressive 80+ connected car features. To add to the premiumness of the cabin, the car offers ambient lighting with up to 256 colour options to choose from.
Besides that, the 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster provides real-time vehicle information, while features like cruise control, wireless phone charging, and remote lock/unlock via a digital key further add to the convenience.

Another segment-first offering is the 360-degree camera, which makes parking in tight spaces effortless, indeed a very useful feature in Indian cities. The Windsor also comes equipped with rear parking sensors, an auto-dimming IRVM, and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, all working together to enhance safety and provide a hassle-free driving experience.

MG has paid close attention to the design and quality of materials inside the Windsor. The dashboard is wrapped in leatherette, offering a premium feel, while the leather-wrapped steering wheel and soft- touch materials on the door panels will give you an ownership feeling not many cars offer, definitely not at this price point. And certainly, not with the benefits of being an EV!
Furthermore, the flat footboard design adds to passenger comfort, making it easier to get in and out of the car and you can easily seat in up to three passengers comfortably at the rear seat.

One of the biggest highlights of the Windsor EV is its massive panoramic glass roof. Not to mention, it is one of the most sought-after features for Indian buyers these days. Unlike a standard sunroof, this glass roof enhances the sense of space, making the cabin feel airy and premium. This is a rare feature in this price segment, especially in EVs.
Safety and peace of mind
MG has equipped the Windsor with an impressive safety package, ensuring both active and passive protection. The car comes with six airbags, ESP, Hill-Start Assist Control, Hill Descent Control, and all- wheel disc brakes. Additionally, features like LED cornering lights, rain-sensing wipers, auto headlamps, and an electronic parking brake with auto hold provide an extra layer of safety and convenience.

The Windsor has also been recognized for its green credentials, winning the Indian Green Car of the Year 2025 award, further cementing its position as a sustainable mobility choice.

Charging convenience and fast charging capability
Charging infrastructure has been a key concern for EV buyers in India, and MG has addressed this with multiple charging options. The Windsor comes with a 3.3 kW portable charging cable and a 3.3 kW AC home charging box as standard. Additionally, the Essence variant supports a 7.4 kW AC fast charger, reducing charging time significantly.

With MG’s expanding charging network and the increasing availability of public charging stations, Windsor owners have plenty of options to keep their EVs powered up.

MG has strategically priced the Windsor EV to offer maximum value for money. The range-topping Essence variant costs Rs 15.99 lakh, making it one of the most feature-loaded EVs in this price bracket. Meanwhile, under the BaaS model, buyers can own the Windsor for just Rs 9.99 lakh (excluding battery costs), further lowering the entry barrier into the EV space.
