‘Jugaad’ electric four-wheeler based on a rural bed surfaces on social media

Business magnate and the Chairman of Mahindra Group, Anand Mahindra, is known for his active presence on social media, particularly on Twitter. He regularly shares inspiring stories of young entrepreneurs and innovative ideas, thereby promoting innovation in the country. In one such recent tweet, Mahindra shared a video in which a man can be seen driving a rural cot or ‘chaarpai’. Yes, you read that right.

India is a country known for ‘jugaads’, wherein people find innovative makeshift ideas to replace things essentially manufactured to perform a task. For instance, in this viral video, a man has fitted four wheels to a ‘chaarpai’ along with a steering wheel, as he is seen driving around with it. It is powered by an electric motor.
Sharing the tweet, Mahindra quoted “I must have received this video from at least ten friends. I didn’t RT it because it seemed more like a prank jugaad to get attention & also violates most regulations. But to be honest, I never thought about the application you have referred to. Yes, who knows, it could turn out to be a lifesaver in extraordinary situations in remote areas”

The Twitter user shared this video 3 days ago and so far it has garnered over 4 lakh views, a major chunk of it might’ve come after Mahindra retweeting it.
As highlighted by the Mahindra chairman himself, the makeshift vehicle does violate most regulations and isn’t a safe option for commuting on roads. However, it can turn out to be a utility solution in remote areas in situations such as healthcare emergencies.
