Flipkart Pilots Electric Trucks for Long-Haul Freight Logistics

Indian e-commerce marketplace Flipkart has significantly expanded its electric vehicle (EV) fleet to over 20,000 vehicles, doubling its deployment from the previous year. This move marks a substantial advancement in the company’s goal of achieving a 100 percent electric last-mile delivery fleet by 2030 and highlights its growing investment in sustainable logistics.

The expanded EV fleet now operates in key metro areas and Tier-ll+ cities, including Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Lucknow. This scale-up supports Flipkart’s broader commitment to the EV100 initiative, a global program led by The Climate Group aimed at accelerating the transition to electric vehicles. The impact on operations is already significant, with over 70 percent of grocery deliveries on the platform now fulfilled using EVs. This demonstrates the viability of electric vehicles for high-frequency, high-density logistics while reducing the company’s operational carbon footprint.

Hemant Badri, Senior Vice President at Flipkart Group said, “We are incredibly proud of our 20,000-EV strong last-mile fleet. At Flipkart, we are always pioneering what’s next. A truly sustainable supply chain means innovating across every single leg. Our new electric truck pilot for long-haul routes is the next frontier. We are building for the future, proving that 100 percent electrification is possible from our fulfillment centers all the way to the customer’s doorstep.

Nishant Gupta, Head of Sustainability at Flipkart added, “Our journey toward an all-electric logistics network is rooted in both scale and substance. Expanding our EV fleet is critical, and we believe true progress lies in building an ecosystem that enables lasting adoption. From empowering our wishmasters with practical knowledge to collaborating with industry partners on infrastructure and product design, we are focused on removing real barriers to adoption and driving inclusive, long-term change. As this transition gains momentum, our responsibility is to ensure it remains equitable, accessible, and responsive to the needs of every stakeholder.

Beyond last-mile deliveries, Flipkart has launched a pilot program to test the feasibility of EVs for long-haul routes. In partnership with Golden Aero Logistics, the company is using a retrofitted Kalyani electric truck on the Delhi-Jaipur corridor. This pilot is designed to evaluate the operational performance, energy efficiency, and turnaround time of electric trucks in medium-distance freight, providing valuable data for future expansion.

To encourage wider adoption across its network, Flipkart initiated a nationwide EV Roadshow in collaboration with OEM partners Revolt and Bajaj. The roadshow, held in multiple cities, allowed delivery partners to test-drive various EV models, learn about charging options, and get answers to questions about battery performance and range. Additionally, Flipkart organized networking events in Delhi and Mumbai to connect manufacturers, fleet operators, and service providers, fostering discussions on infrastructure, financing, and vehicle readiness.

To ensure its workforce is prepared for the EV transition, Flipkart launched the Wishmaster Digital Campaign. This interactive learning platform educates delivery partners on the company’s EV goals, vehicle operations, charging best practices, and the benefits of sustainability. According to a survey of over 5,410 delivery partners, sentiment towards EVs is positive, with almost half expressing a keen interest in switching. However, the survey also identified challenges, with access to affordable credit remaining a significant barrier to adoption.
