Delhi-based EV Fi-ne-tech startup Chargeup has set up India’s first solar-powered battery swapping station in Jaipur. This EV charging station, equipped with solar technology, will cater to the battery swapping needs of electric vehicle owners in the state by using a solar-power grid.
As per the company, this system allows for highly efficient battery charging, completely free from reliance on conventional energy sources. The solar-powered battery swapping station boasts a capacity of charging 140 kWh of batteries, fulfilling a significant 20% of the station’s total energy requirements.
As a result, the company is aiming to lower the cost of charging an EV battery, thus promoting the adoption of EVs. It also addresses grid stability issues in certain regions, ensuring impressive uptime even during power cuts.
Chargeup said that this pilot will be replicated across the country, starting from Jaipur, where it will be setting up more such facilities. The installed solar power plant also slashes additional CO2 emissions that traditional battery charging methods produce.
The company said that it is planning to broaden this initiative to 30 stations, covering 80% of Jaipur’s pin codes, and replicate this model in other cities, particularly in Tier-2 locations.
Last year, the company raised a funding of $7 million, which it plans to utilise in its expansion to over 20 cities. Furthermore, the firm also provides battery as a service (Baas) across the NCR region.
