Maruti eVX Electric SUV Testing Commences in India

Maruti Suzuki is making significant strides in the electric vehicle (EV) segment, with the Maruti EVX Electric SUV currently undergoing testing in India. Expected to compete directly with the Hyundai Creta EV, this electric SUV is slated for a launch in early 2025. The journey of the Maruti EVX began when it was first unveiled as a concept at the 2023 Auto Expo in January. Subsequently, it was seen on test runs in Poland and later showcased in a near-production-ready format at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show alongside the new Swift.

Spy shots of the Maruti EVX undergoing testing in India have surfaced, with credit to the Speed Shifter channel. The testing took place in Gurgaon, near the Maruti Suzuki plant. This new EVX will be built on a platform derived from Toyota’s 40PL electric skateboard architecture, internally known as 27PL. Production is set to occur at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat plant, with the promise of competitive pricing due to a significant level of localization.

The Maruti EVX Electric SUV is anticipated to have dimensions measuring approximately 4,300mm in length, 1,800mm in width, and 1,600mm in height, featuring a wheelbase of 2,700mm. The exterior design closely resembles the concept version, incorporating an upright front fascia, covered front grille, L-shaped headlamps, wrap-around tail lamps, rear door handles mounted on the C-pillars, and an integrated roof spoiler. Its coupe-SUV stance is accentuated by a tapering roofline towards the rear.

Inside, the eVX showcases a two-spoke steering wheel, power window switches, adjustable power seats, ample storage, horizontally positioned AC vents, a tall dashboard design with a floating central digital instrument console, and a large touchscreen infotainment panel. Noteworthy features include a 360-degree camera, ambient lighting, a multi-function steering wheel, rearview mirror, and a rotary drive mode selector. The vehicle rides on silver-finished multi-spoke alloy wheels and prioritizes passenger safety with multiple airbags and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

The Maruti Suzuki eVX concept initially boasted a 60 kWh battery, providing an impressive range of 550 kilometers. However, the production version might feature a slightly smaller 48 kWh battery, offering a real-world range of around 400 kilometers. In terms of competition, the Maruti Suzuki eVX Electric SUV is set to enter the market as the company’s maiden electric vehicle, directly challenging the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV and Seltos EV. Collaboratively developed with Toyota, it is expected to hit the market before its Toyota counterpart. Other contenders in the electric SUV space include the Tata Nexon EV MAX and the Mahindra XUV400. Although official pricing details are yet to be disclosed, early estimates suggest a price range of Rs 18-22 lakh (ex-showroom) for the Maruti Suzuki eVX.
