The government has approved Rs 688.84 crore for setting up 6,562 public electric vehicle charging stations under the PM E-DRIVE scheme, but no expenditure has been incurred so far.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari told the Rajya Sabha that whilst proposals worth Rs 688.84 crore have been sanctioned from the scheme’s Rs 2,000 crore allocation for public charging infrastructure, utilisation remains nil.

The clarification comes as the Ministry of Heavy Industries revealed that as of 22 July, proposals for 5,871 EV chargers across nine states had been approved, with an additional 691 chargers from three oil marketing companies also receiving approval.

Karnataka received approval for the largest number at 1,571 chargers, followed by Delhi with 1,146 and Rajasthan with 805. The government confirmed the charging infrastructure component remains at the approval and deployment stage.

Despite the implementation delay on new installations, the PM E-DRIVE scheme has supported the sale of 26. 54 lakh electric vehicles as of 22nd July 2026.
