Kia recently revealed the road map for its EV plans as it goes full steam ahead with the launch of two mass-market EVs for India. The carmaker will first bring premium EVs starting with the EV6, which is already present in the market, followed by the EV9, a full flagship EV SUV that could cost Rs 1 crore.
However, in 2025, the carmaker will bring two mass-market EVs including the Carens EV being an all-electric MPV while the second would be the new Clavis SUV which would slot between the Sonet and the Seltos.
The more interesting product that Kia will bring in is the Clavis which would be another sub 4m SUV which would be coming with multiple powertrains as well including an EV. The Carens EV would have most probably different styling but the basic shape of the car would be the same.
Globally, Kia would have multiple EVs including the EV2, EV3 and EV5. Kia will introduce many EVs globally but the India-specific models would be the key to its growth in our market. Currently, Kia has the premium EV6 but to make a sizable dent in the mass market EV space, it needs products under Rs 20 lakh. These EVs would be ICE-derived electric cars which means quicker launch times and greater economies of scale. By 2030, it expects to have 15 EVs with sales of 1.6 million units globally. Additionally, the carmaker will also bring in hybrids including plug-in hybrids. In India, the carmaker will stick to EVs for now, with these mass-market EVs coming by 2025.
