Mahindra has launched a state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing and battery assembly plant at its Chakan facility in Pune. This new center will play a pivotal role in the production of Electric Origin SUVs and is a key part of the company’s ongoing efforts to lead the charge in sustainable mobility.
Located within Mahindra’s expansive 2.83 square kilometer Chakan manufacturing hub, one of India’s largest greenfield projects, the new facility is designed with sustainability at its core. The entire hub is water-positive and operates entirely on renewable energy. As part of its Rs 16,000 crore investment plan for FY22 to FY27, Mahindra has allocated Rs 4,500 crore to boost its electric vehicle operations, focusing on powertrain development, advanced technologies, and manufacturing capacity.
The facility integrates cutting-edge automation, with over 1,000 robots and automated material handling systems to streamline production. In addition to its technological advancements, the plant emphasizes skill development and aims for a 25% gender diversity ratio, reflecting Mahindra’s commitment to inclusivity and preparedness for future industry demands.
The battery assembly line at the Chakan plant is equipped with advanced systems and patented processes to produce high-performance batteries. These batteries undergo rigorous testing to ensure they meet high safety, efficiency, and durability standards, ensuring long-term reliability. This investment reinforces Mahindra’s dedication to the “Make in India” initiative and its contribution to India’s sustainability targets, including the COP26 goals for 2030.
