‘Holistic Policy Needed To Realise Renewable Energy Targets’

The 3-day UP Energy Expo 2025 being held at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan concluded on Saturday with stake holders stressing the importance of holistic policy framework to realise renewable energy targets for 2030.Over 8,000 participants, including industry specialists, corporate executives and govt representatives, attended the event that showcased advancements in solar technologies, electric vehicles and energy storage solutions. On the final day, experts engaged in four panel discussions to deliberate on the state’s development in solar EPC, electric transport, energy storage and grid modernisation projects.UPPCL chief engineer Deepak Raizada said: “The UP govt is making one of the strongest contributions in battery storage systemsacross India.

We invite investors to set up battery storage plants in the state and assure them of full support. There’s no shortage of power supply in UP, and with support from IIT Kanpur and BHU, we are developing robust feeders and infrastructure for solar EPC.”Speakers said there was a need to address challenges such as rural electricity access, land acquisition and workforce training and urged enhanced interdepartmental coordination to spur investment at the national level.Deliberations on electrified transport confirmed EVs as pivotal for India’s carbon-neutral ambitions by 2050.

Currently, UP represents 15% of the country’s EV usage, with a structured introduction of electric buses on track for 2030. The state also plans to install EV charging stations every 25Km along highways through PPP ventures, under the supervision of UPSRTC. Participants regarded battery costs as a primary barrier, with calls for technological innovation and price reductions.UPSRTC service manager Ramesh Kumar said: “The govt has already provided permit and road tax exemptions for electric buses. Setting up EV charging stations will play a crucial role in promoting electric buses across the state.”Madhyanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited Commercial Director Yogesh Kumar said: “Our power supply is heavily dependent on thermal energy, with demand peaking in the afternoon and evening during summer. We need to store surplus energy generated during off-peak hours to stabilise the grid and prevent shortfalls during peak times. The govt is planning to build substations for energy storage.”
