Orders for the upcoming Ford Mach-E – the fully electric Mustang – may open as soon as mid-May, new images of the ordering interface that were shared with an online Mach-E forum suggest. The mockup up form also shows a shipping date for late 2020.
Reservations for the Mustang Mach-E have been open since soon after its unveil in November 2019, and by January it appeared that, according to reservation numbers collected by a member of the Mach-E forum, Ford had already taken $US500 reservation fees from 30,000 interested US drivers.
Ford has not confirmed these numbers but in a press release on March 10 said that it had taken reservations from customers in all 50 US states.
Although Ford, along with other car makers in the US and abroad, has currently reduced production at its north and south American factories to help contain the spread of Covid-19, it would appear that it still intends to keep to its slated release for the Premium and First Edition versions of the Mach-E in late 2020.
The Mach-E, which will be available in five variants from the “Select” entry model to the upper end “GT”, is Ford’s first foray into all-electric drivetrains.
Starting at $US43,895 with a top range of 300 miles (482km) for more expensive models, the opening of order books will be Ford’s step towards electrification which includes plans to introduce at least 16 all-electric models.
A partnership with German car maker Volkswagen to explore EVs and self-driving vehicles, a $US500 million investment in Michigan electric car startup Rivian and development of an all-electric F-150 utility truck also form steps on Ford’s path to electrification.
It is understood that a right-hand drive version of the Mach-E will be fast-tracked for the UK, a good sign that the all-electric Mustang may also be on the cards for Australia.
